Fish Food For Thought

OK. Those fish hats over at Knitty are the drop-dead funniest thing I've seen in a quite a while. And of course I want to knit a whole aquarium full in lots of tropical colors to match my many ensembles. Maybe some in Blackberry Ridge's Tropical Fish colorway. Seems apropos, no?

I finished my truffles for the cookie swap tomorrow. They don't look like much but they'll be yum anyway. I needed to make 48. The recipe made somewhere in the neighborhood of a gigamultibazillion so I farmed the overage out to my neighbors. They put up with Ben and me as long as I keep the baked goods coming. Sugar soothes the savage natives and all that. I also made the cake for the Chili Cook Off lunch so my nest smells all warm and chocolate-y.
Speaking of chocolate-y. I set out to send a friend's husband a small package of goodies for the holidays. He is stationed in Afghanistan right now. I thought maybe my coworkers might want to send wishes as well so I put out the word. Folks from all over the company contributed candy, snacks, puzzle books, lotion and lip balm. They all signed a card I had to go with the shipment. By the time we got done, we had 2 boxes that weighed about 22# each! The picture doesn't do justice to how big the boxes were. That kind of selfless outpouring always brings tears to my eyes. People really are good. It's too bad I get discouraged and tend to let a few rotten apples spoil the while barrel sometimes.
I also got some more knitting done. Update on Rav. First picture. One and 1/3 down. Should be finished by this weekend so I can get started on my school of hats!!! I'll be up to my gills in the things! Before you know it I'll start carping about them. Holy Mackerel! I think it's time to go to bed!

Those hats are the awesomest! I need to figure out if I have enough of the superwash that I could make them to match Bug and Bean's mittens...

Sturgeon Bay Speed Racer

I was in Sturgeon Bay over the weekend and went to see the Third Ave Playhouse's matinee of Shooting Star with Doug Mancheski and Amy Ensign. It was a great play about old lovers that meet up by chance years later while they are snowed in at an airport. The house was packed-sold out-which was great to see. This is such a wonderful theater and the plays I've seen there are intimate and outstanding!  I'd never seen Amy act before and she was amazing! And of course, Doug was his usual magnificent self! He has such a range of skills. If you've only seen him in his comedic plays, you owe it to yourself to try and catch one of his shows at TAP and see his more serious side. The average age of the crowd at this play was 75+.  It's weird to be one of the 'youngsters' in the crowd at 54! Reminds me of the time I went to Irish Fest on a  Burkhaulter tour bus out of Madison in my 30s. The average age on that bus was 812 and all they adopted me as the naughty grandchi...

This week's Diva Challenge was to use Maria Thomas' awesome new tangle 'Schway'.  It's probably all kinds of illegal but I'm going to cut and paste the directions here because it is just so nifty: Two simple steps make all of those arrows! I thought about not posting this challenge entry  because, while I was so anxious to try this pattern-as well as take a much needed stress break, the resulting tile was less than stellar. In fact it down right stinks, but it did the job as a stress reliever anyway. My challenge rules are that I always go with the first attempt. Sometimes it works. Popping Up Again Like the Flowers of Spring

Wow! Five months since I've written on here! Doesn't seem like that long on the one hand....but on the other, it seems like 5 years!  This has been the longest. winter. ever.  To be fair, not a lot of earth-shattering, blog-worthy stuff has been happening, Maine for Christmas, work, teaching Zentangle, crafting, reading and trying to keep our sanity here at McCurdo Midwest. But it looks like to long months of house arrest are finally over. Our spring flowers are up-crocuses mostly. Once the 5 foot snowbank in the garden melted, we discovered that they had jumped the gun and were already 3-4 inches high under there! Bless their little hearts. With the warmer (relative term) weather and the ice gone, long walks are once again on the docket. Love to take three or four miles through Prairie Park and watch the world waking up again.
