It's The Little Things That Will See You Through

Oddly enough, one of my great joys these days is my early morning walk with Ben. I've never been a morning person but for whatever reason, I am now! We go out after he's had his breakfast around 6AM, just as the sun is peeking over the trees. It's quiet and still and, with the cooler weather, there's often ground fog. One of my favorite places is the pond in the prairie conservancy across the street. Every morning there is a variety of water fowl in there including a blue heron, inland terns, Sandhill cranes, Canadian Geese, ducks and a Kingfisher. I got smart this morning and took my camera. Our buddy the heron was there. He was standing tall and majestic until I aimed the camera at which time he proceeded to hunker down like a toad under a cabbage leaf and glare at me. Thus, I have evidence of his existence (you'll need to biggify for proof), but I don't have a shot at that National Geographic Photographer of The Year Award I had my eye on...
What a primadonna! And there was no waiting him out either, we tried! At least the geese were more cooperative. Anyway...it's the little things that will see you through the rough spots....

What a great place to have a nice morning walk! We live across the street from a pond, too, and I feel so fortunate to have something so nice be so accessible. I loved hearing about the different birds you spotted, too. I'm no good at naming them, so I love hearing people tell me what they are.

Herons are awfully hard to photograph. I think you need a really really big lens and a very sturdy tripod if you want to get into Natl Geographic. ;)

But, hey, he's not just a speck in that picture. I've had my share of herons that look like specks over the years.

So here's an even littler thing, but way cool... Those gbh's (great blue herons) have a pectinate middle toe, meaning that the inside side of the toe is like a comb, which they use to preen themselves. And sometimes, when the mud is just right, you can see it in their footprints. (dogs'll do that to ya... make ya a morning person!)

Loved the pictures.
Ooh, I want a dog and a pond and ground fog and a pectinate toe, too!
